PUBLIC LOCAL INQUIRY INTO THE CASE FOR THE NETWORK RAIL (WERRINGTON GRADE SEPARATION) ORDER

APPLICATION TO THE SECRETARY OF STATE UNDER SECTION 6 OF THE TRANSPORT AND WORKS ACT 1992 FOR AN ORDER UNDER SECTIONS 1 AND 5

The Proposed Scheme provides a new twin track railway and associated works at Werrington, linking the Great Northern/Great Eastern line (GNGE) to the lines between Peterborough and Stamford (the ‘Stamford lines’). These works would enable slow moving freight trains to travel on a dedicated route under the East Coast Mail Line (ECML) and then onto the GNGE and vice versa, as opposed to crossing the ECML at the same level (at grade), thus allowing for an increase in capacity for additional trains on the ECML. This type of junction is known as a grade-separated junction, i.e. tracks are separated by their grade, or level.
